Types of Gynecologic Cancers: Uterine
The uterus is part of a woman's reproductive system. It is
the hollow, pear-shaped organ where a baby grows. The uterus is
in the pelvis between the bladder and the rectum.
Uterine cancer continues to be the most common of all gynecologic
cancers. It also is the most easily detected and cured. Uterine
cancer most often is found in women after menopause but can occur
in women before menopause. The most common form of uterine
cancer develops from the endometrium – or the inner lining
of the uterus. This form of uterine cancer is known as endometrial
cancer.
Detecting Uterine Cancer
Uterine cancer is usually caught early because it often causes
symptoms – abnormal bleeding in a patient who has been
through menopause. Thus she recognizes that she should
not have any vaginal bleeding and seeks medical attention. Abnormal
bleeding between periods also can be of concern for patients
who have not gone through menopause. However, symptoms
may not appear, and that’s why regular, yearly medical
check-ups can be so important when it comes to early detection
of uterine cancer.
