Brown Cancer Center. Making tomorrow BRIGHTER for everyone.

Mint Jubilee Cancer Resource Center

Learning you have cancer is both terrifying and overwhelming. Your life may be turned upside down and inside out in a matter of moments. All of a sudden you are thrown into a world of complicated medical terms. You may be given choices regarding a variety of seemingly scary treatment options. And, you may be frightened about the possible side effects of those treatment options. We’re here to help.

Treating the Whole Patient
In keeping with our mission of education, the Mint Jubilee Cancer Resource Center was created to provide a peaceful environment for cancer patients to learn, relax and heal emotionally. The Mint Jubilee Resource Center collaborates with Kentucky Cancer Program, American Cancer Society and Brown Cancer Center clinical staff to provide cancer patients and caregivers with accurate, reliable information to help them make intelligent decisions about cancer care. The Center offers educational materials, videos and Internet access to cancer-related websites that give them the knowledge and skills they need to cope with their condition and its sometimes-debilitating treatments. The Center connects patients with support groups and other supportive services that help in the healing process.

The Mint Jubilee Resource Center was borne out of the Brown Cancer Center’s mission to provide whole-patient care, which includes restoration of a patient’s mental state of well being. For some, this might mean makeup and wigs to be able to go out to lunch or go shopping without feeling self-conscious. For others, it might be a therapeutic exercise program to regain strength or flexibility. For still others, help may come from a support group or from talking with a counselor. From coffee to counseling, the goal of the Mint Jubilee Cancer Resource Center is to help connect patients and family members with needed services.

Mint JubileeBringing out the Beauty Within
The Center works cooperatively with the American Cancer Society, hosting the “Look Good, Feel Better” program once a month. The program helps women learn more about ways to work with make-up and styles to look and feel your best while receiving cancer treatment. The Center also provides wigs and turbans and refers patients to area stylists with experience helping cancer patients.

While the means appear cosmetic, the result is tremendously therapeutic. The Resource Center is able to provide a way for patients to participate in their own recovery. This service helps them reclaim a sense of control over this part of their lives. They are able to return to some degree of normalcy and restore their day-to-day routines.

Forming a Link to Other Services
While your physician takes the lead in your treatment plan, our Oncology Information Specialist will work with you to link you with other services both at the Cancer Center in the community. These services may include:

  • Registered dieticians to help patients maintain a nutritional diet and proper meal/medication schedules;
  • Rehabilitation Services to assist patients with pain management and deliver physical therapy; and
  • Chaplains to provide a nurturing environment and emotional encouragement for patients and families.

Patient care is enhanced through these comprehensive support services at every stage of cancer treatment.

A Sanctuary in the Battle
The Mint Jubilee Cancer Resource Center not only provides unique services, but also a special atmosphere. The Resource Center was designed to provide a soothing and healing sanctuary for cancer patients. The ambience of the Resource Center is welcoming, healing and comforting. In fact, the natural lighting and colors of the Center were specifically chosen to promote a healing atmosphere.

A Community Resource
The Mint Jubilee Cancer Resource Center is supported by the Mint Jubilee, a foundation that is the host for an annual fund-raising Derby Eve celebration. Today, thanks to the tireless effort of the Mint Jubilee volunteers and supporters, the Mint Jubilee Cancer Resource Center continues to help cancer patients fight this dreadful disease. The Mint Jubilee event is held annually on Derby Eve in Louisville for the purpose of raising funds for cancer research.

While the Mint Jubilee Cancer Resource Center is located in the heart of the Brown Cancer Center, it is open to all cancer patients, family members, friends, and other interested parties. For more information about the Center, call 502-562-4158.
